Electronics / Mechatronics Engineer
About Netholabs
Netholabs is a neurotechnology company building the interface between brains and intelligent machines. Our mission is to achieve functional whole-brain emulation — a foundation for understanding consciousness, cognition, and control in living systems.
We operate at the convergence of neuroengineering, machine learning, and complex systems, developing technologies that close the loop between perception, computation, and behaviour. Our long-term goal is twofold: to eliminate animal testing by building accurate, data-driven brain models — and to ensure that as AI grows more capable, human agency and understanding grow alongside it.
The Role
We are seeking a hands-on Electronics / Mechatronics Engineer to help design and build the next generation of intelligent experimental systems. This role sits at the heart of our hardware innovation efforts — integrating embedded systems, smart sensors, and neural interfaces to scale up our preclinical research platforms.
You will take ownership of design, development, and testing across multiple hardware layers - from CAD design of hardware and smart panels to firmware integration and Linux-level system administration. Working closely with our neuroscience and AI teams, you’ll help bring to life robust, high-performance devices that advance the frontier of brain-inspired technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and prototype electronic systems and subsystems, from concept through production-level implementation.
- Develop and test smart research panels integrating microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi 4/5 systems, and distributed sensor modules.
- Integrate hardware and software stacks, including embedded firmware, Python scripts, and device-level APIs.
- Maintain data workflows on servers and workstations using systems administration tools and packages.
- (Optional) Design and layout PCBs for compact, reliable embedded and I/O systems; iterate through fabrication, testing, and revision cycles.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (AI, neuroscience, software) to validate system performance and optimize for data quality, robustness, and scalability.
- Prototype mechatronic assemblies and mechanical enclosures using CAD (Fusion360, SolidWorks, or similar).
- Contribute to the integration of neural and behavioural interfaces in preclinical environments.
About You
You’re an engineer who thrives on end-to-end ownership — building complete systems that work in the real world. You have a deep curiosity for how things work, from circuits to cognition, and you’re motivated by hard problems that require both creativity and precision.
- You thrive in early-stage startup environments.
- You deliver with speed and rigour, and constantly ask, “Can this be done better?”
- You love the challenge of integrating hardware, software, and biology into coherent systems.
- You’re highly self-directed and push projects forward autonomously.
- You enjoy startup energy: fast iteration, technical depth, and seeing your work in production.
- You want your engineering to mean something — contributing to the understanding of mind, agency, and intelligence.
What We Offer
- A research-driven environment at the intersection of AI, neuroscience, and complex systems.
- A collaborative, interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists pursuing one shared mission.
- Access to state-of-the-art computing and lab infrastructure.
- Competitive salary with meaningful equity participation.
- Strong mentorship and career development, with opportunities to define your role as the company scales.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Mechatronics Engineering (Master’s/PhD welcome but not required).
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in electronics design, simulation, and testing.
- Demonstrated experience in full product development cycles (concept → prototype → production).
- Proficiency with Python, Linux, and system-level scripting.
- Familiarity with PCB design tools (KiCAD, Altium, etc.) and fabrication processes.
- Working knowledge of IoT architectures, miniaturized PCB systems, or neurotech/biosensing devices (preferred).
- Solid understanding of signal integrity, power systems, and hardware debugging.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving, research-driven environment.
Equity
